“It could have been oh so different…”
It’s no secret that Roy Keane was very close to signing for Blackburn from Nottingham Forest, instead of Manchester United.
In fact it is believed that Keane and Dalglish shook hands, and the deal was all-but done, until one Alex Ferguson swooped in to bring him to Manchester instead.
Alan Shearer, who was with Blackburn at the time, has elaborated on the story, explaining exactly how Dalglish reacted when he realised his countryman had robbed him of one of the best players in the world.
He said that it was just one of many incidents between Ferguson and Dalglish that left the Liverpool legend with a bad taste in his mouth.
Alan Shearer on Roy Keane almost signing for Blackburn
He said: “Kenny and Sir Alex. There is huge respect there between them, they are two giants of football. But Kenny used to take the piss out of Sir Alex all the time, and try and wind him up. Sir Alex would try and do the same.
“When I first signed for Blackburn, not long after I’d signed, I was out in a restaurant with Kenny and his family. Kenny went out on his phone and I thought ‘He must be doing a bit of business’.
“He came back in with a huge grin on his face, and said ‘I think we’ve done a deal to get Roy Keane to Blackburn…’
“About two hours later, after him celebrating with a couple of glasses of red wine, he’d gone back outside and he came in with a face like fucking thunder.
“He said ‘We’ve lost him. He’s gone, Fergie’s got him.’ He was seething. So it could have been oh so different.”

Keane went on to become United’s greatest ever captain, while Blackburn fans will be left wondering what could have been if they managed to bring the Corkman to Ewood Park.
