Would this be a smart signing, or should he stay where he is?

Ralph Hasenhuttl has responded to the reports linking midfielder James Ward-Prowse with both Manchester United and Manchester City.

The Southampton manager was not giving any air time to the possibility of his captain leaving this summer, insisting that he is happy to remain at the club.

United in particular will certainly be in the market for a midfielder this summer, and given their tendency to spend big on British players, this does seem like a transfer rumour that could have legs.

When asked about the increase in reports as of late, he said: “He has another four years on his contract, he’s our captain and he’s happy here.

“What an amazing job he has done this season so far. Fans love him and we know how important he is to our team. The development of his game is why he’s a true winner. I think he’s very exceptional. I haven’t seen any players similar.”

Ward-Prowse signed a new contract at the Saints last summer, amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.

This means that if any of the so-called big clubs were to swoop in for the dead-ball specialist, he would be far from cheap.

Hasenhuttl’s side are an interesting position this season, as they find themselves just eight points clear of the relegation zone, but only four points from a top-half finish.

They take on Brentford this weekend, and will be really hoping for three points, so as to avoid a disappointing end to a lacklustre season.

If they do end up finishing 15th or worse, Ward-Prowse may be right to start looking up at those interested in him.
