An interesting choice too.
Real Madrid reportedly have Kylian Mbappe’s squad number ready for him, amid transfer speculation that he is set to join the club.
Mbappe looks like he could be leaving PSG and heading to Madrid, where the #5 jersey will be ready and waiting for him, according to AS.
The #5 is not one that is normally worn by forwards, but it was worn by the iconic Zinedene Zidane during his time at the Spanish club.
Mbappe will be hoping to have a similar impact as his fellow countryman, who also went on to manage the club, until he left this summer.
The #5 at Real Madrid is currently worn by Jesus Vallejo, who has returned to the club from various loan spells away. It would be very surprising if Vallejo is a guaranteed starter this season, which could explain why his jersey is up for grabs.
But we did see how that turned out with Raphael Varane and Phil Jones, so maybe it won’t be as straightforward as expected.
Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid.
The latest reports suggest that Madrid will be able to land the striker in a €170million deal plus a further €10m in add-ons.
Mbappe was a Madrid fan when he was younger, and it has often been assumed that he would go to Spain when he finished in France.
However, not many saw his exit coming this summer, especially given how much PSG have strengthened their squad.
His PSG contract expires at the end of the season and he has so far rejected the French club’s attempts to renew his deal.
Sky Sports have recently reported that Madrid are “increasingly confident” that they will be able to sign the 22-year-old before the end of the transfer window.
Mbappe has already won a World Cup, and four Ligue 1 titles. However, the Champions League has always been just out of his grasp, which he will be hoping to change in Spain.
