Immense praise heaped on Wes Hoolahan as he leaves Cambridge

What a player, what a reputation.

Wes Hoolahan is leaving Cambridge United, after an extremely successful spell with the English football club.

You would think that a 39-year-old, who has been playing at a high level for over 20 years at this point, would start to look out of a place on a football pitch, but that certainly hasn’t been the case for Hoolahan.

While he may not have been able to play every single minute, when he did get on the pitch, he was one of the standout performers.

So it’s no surprise to see some ridiculously high praise coming in for the Dubliner, who is set to leave the club.

His manager Mark Bonner said: “Wes Hoolahan leaves this summer after an instrumental two seasons with us. His influence on the team, role in winning games and contribution to last season’s promotion and this year’s form cannot be understated.

“His experience and professionalism have made him a key member of the team and a pleasure to work with. I know how fortunate I am that my two years in the role have coincided with Wes’ time here and he is, without doubt, the most talented player I have seen play for the club over the three decades I have been watching.”

Hoolahan being “the best” is a common theme among those at Cambridge, with goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov saying he was “by far” the best player he had played with.

“Absolute pleasure playing with this legend. By far the best player I’ve ever played with. Such a humble person and we all gonna miss him.”

While his teammates are undeniably going to miss him, Hoolahan himself was seemingly emotional at the prospect of leaving the club he helped go on a cup run earlier this year.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more from the two years I had”, he said, as he now faces a difficult decision about the next stage in his lengthy career.
