Man United send scout to watch goalkeeper on worst possible night

Meslier Man United

A tough night for the youngster…

Manchester United reportedly sent their goalkeeping scout to watch Manchester City vs Leeds United on Tuesday, to take a look at Illan Meslier.

Meslier, at just 21, is extremely young for a goalkeeper, and has occasionally shown himself to be a very accomplished shot-stopper.

However, United’s scouts were in attendance at the wrong game if they wanted to see Meslier at his best, as the young Frenchman shipped seven goals in the 7-0 loss.

However, the 7-0 scoreline may be slightly harsh on Meslier, who did also make eight saves, out of 31 shots that City took at goal.

Meslier in the past has made some excellent saves, which led to him becoming Leeds’ #1 keeper in the Premier League at just 20 years of age.

However, largely due to his inexperience, he has made a number of high profile mistakes too, most recently being caught out quite badly against Chelsea.

Man United’s chief scout Jim Lawlor has watched the keeper before, and the Daily Mail claim goalkeeping scout Tony Coton believes Meslier to be among the best young goalkeepers in the world.

If the Manchester club are interested in signing him any time soon, he wouldn’t come cheap, as he recently signed a new contract with Leeds that will keep him at the club until 2026.

Ralf Rangnick recently came out to say that one or two of his goalkeepers should go on loan, amid reports that Dean Henderson was garnering interest from Ajax.

While de Gea remains United’s #1, he only has 18 months left on his contract, so it’s not at all surprising to see the club planning for the future.

De Gea has been quite the servant for United over the years, winning their Player of the Season on multiple occasions, but his time at the top will come to an end at some point, and it could be either Meslier or Henderson who steps in to replace him.
