Report: Idrissa Gueye refused to play for PSG over rainbow colours

More drama in Paris it seems.

Reports from France suggest that midfielder Idrissa Gueye refused to play for PSG at the weekend due to the rainbow colours on the jersey.

PSG wore rainbow colours on the front and back of their jersey during their 4-0 win over Montpellier this weekend, to show support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Gueye didn’t take part in the game, with many speculating as to why that may have been the case.

At first, it was reported that the midfielder missed the game due to a stomach issue, or another type of illness, though what has been said since suggests that that is not the case.

Idrissa Gueye’s PSG absence

RMC Sport have made the claim that Gueye’s absence was indeed because of his refusal to wear a kit featuring the rainbow flag.

In May of 2021 every side in Ligue 1 and 2 came out with rainbow numbers, part of the LFP’s “Gay or straight, we all wear the same jersey” campaign, and the same happened again this season.

French publications L’Équipe and Le Parisien also pointed out that Gueye had missed the same round of games last season, also having not worn the rainbow colours.

PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino said that Gueye didn’t play the match for “personal reasons”, implying he wasn’t injured or sick.

It is important to note that Gueye has not commented publicly on these accusations, nor have PSG as a team. The club simply stated that the reason they wear these colours is to show solidarity as a symbol of “peace and diversity”.

In the game itself, Lionel Messi scored a brace, with Kylian Mbappe registering a beautiful assist with an outside of the foot pass to his Argentinian teammate. Check it out below:
