Completely unacceptable.

Both Drogheda United and Finn Harps have condemned the racist abuse aimed at Ethan Boyle in Friday night’s League of Ireland match.

The Finn Harps defender was racially targeted in his side’s 3-1 defeat at Head in the Game Park, with both clubs involved having released statements to condemn the act.

It was a Drogheda fan who was seen to be abusing Boyle, with the club stating he was kicked out of the stadium at half-time.

The Louth club wrote: “Drogheda United condemn the racist abuse suffered by Ethan Boyle last night. The individual in question was identified and removed from the ground at half time, and will be banned from attending future Drogheda United matches.

“Racism has no place in society or football.”

Boyle’s own club released a similar statement, where they thanked Drogheda for dealing with the situation swiftly.

“Finn Harps condemn the racist abuse that Ethan Boyle was subjected to at the game last night.

“We would like to thank Drogheda United and their supporters for reacting quickly and dealing with the person involved.

“Racism has no place in our game.”

Boyle himself played the full game, and is yet to publicly speak about the incident in question.

However, some of his fellow footballers did take to social media to speak out about what happened on Friday night.

St Pats’ Tunde Owolabi took to Twitter to voice his fury with what happened to Boyle, urging the Harps defender to stay strong.

He wrote: “I am absolutely that things like this keeps happening. When will it ever stop? We may have different skin colour but we all bleed red. Stay strong bro.”

It is likely that the league itself will dish out a punishment to the fan in question, while Drogheda will also deal with the matter internally.
