A big signing in this season’s relegation battle.
While Chris Wood reportedly going to Newcastle from Burnley may not be the most exciting transfer in the world, it could end up being absolutely crucial.
Newcastle fans may have expected something a bit more Hollywood, when it came to signing their first striker since becoming the richest football club in the world.
But sometimes, the right decision is not the most fashionable one, and this feels like one of those times.
Wood has scored a total of 53 Premier League goals since joining Burnley in 2017, and has done so in a consistent manner too. He has scored over 10 league goals in all of the past four league seasons.
He will also offer Newcastle something different up front, and a connection with Kieran Trippier’s crossing could prove to be a fruitful one.
Christ Wood to Newcastle
However, arguably the most important aspect of this transfer is the fact that Wood is leaving one of Newcastle’s relegation rivals halfway through the season.
When it comes down to the end of the season, it is extremely likely that Newcastle or Burnley will be in the relegation zone. If Newcastle can take Wood’s goals away from Burnley, it makes it far more likely that it will be Sean Dyche’s side going down.
Burnley are already in a position where their squad depth is not of the same standard as the rest of the league, so this will be a major blow for their hopes of survival.
Dyche is said to be furious that Wood is leaving, but the New Zealander has a release clause in his contract, so the Burnley manager has no choice but to accept.
Add that to the fact that Callum Wilson is out for the next seven weeks, and that he is an injury prone striker in general, and it feels as though this signing could be key in helping Newcastle stay up.
