Champions League final could be battle for Ballon d’Or

Ballon D'or 2022

It seems like it will be a two-horse race.

With Real Madrid and Liverpool both set to face off in the Champions League final at the end of the month, the stage is set for an incredible occasion.

Liverpool appears to be the best team in the world when it comes to playing in Europe, while Madrid are finding a way to overcome anyone in their path, one way or another.

So something has to give in Paris, and while all eyes will be on whoever lifts the trophy when the final whistle blows, there is another interesting narrative developing as the season comes to an end.

Both Karim Benzema and Sadio Mane seem to be the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or, to the point that it might come down to who wins the Champions League.

Mane could win a historic quadruple, all while being one of his team’s best players, scoring crucial goals on a number of occasions. He scored in the FA Cup semi-final that, and in both legs of the Champions League semi-finals.

As well as this, he delivered an AFCON to his home country of Senegal, while also helping them qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

He has been brilliant for Jurgen Klopp’s side, and if Liverpool win the Champions League, the forward would likely pick up the award.

However, there is the small issue of Real Madrid’s extraordinary talisman – Benzema.

Benzema’s performance in the Champions League has been nothing short of spectacular this season. The incredible hat-trick against PSG that got them out of jail, before an even more incredible hat-trick against Chelsea which did the same.

His composure and elegance in both legs against Manchester City, and his incredible attitude – ensuring his team never gave up.

Plus he will win the Golden Boot in La Liga with ease, currently over 10 goals ahead of Iago Aspas in second place.

Benzema remains the favourite, with Mo Salah in second place, largely due to his excellent league campaign. But a match-winner from Mane in the final would surely change that, especially given what he has done in Europe and internationally this season.

Will it come down to the biggest game of the season? We’ll find out in Paris…
