He couldn’t resist…

Liverpool defeated Aston Villa 1-0 last weekend, with Steven Gerrard’s return to Anfield being the topic of much discussion both before and after the game.

And despite the loss, his side gave a really good account of themselves, putting in a really solid, defensive display – something we’ve come to expect from his Villa team already.

Andy Robertson was instrumental to helping Liverpool win the game, and speaking after the game, he had nothing but high praise for Gerrard.

However, the childhood Celtic fan couldn’t resist getting one dig in about Rangers when discussing the Liverpool legend.

Speaking to the Mirror, he said: “I’m just glad he’s away from Rangers now!

“He’s already proven that he’s a fantastic manager even though he’s very early into his managerial career, and he’s already achieved a lot.

“That shouldn’t really surprise you with the career he’s had at Liverpool, and he seems to be carrying that into management.

“At Rangers he transformed them into a team that wins, he took the title off Celtic, and now he’s got a really good job at Villa, a huge club with a great squad. He’s taken to the Premier League like a duck to water.”

He also wished Gerrard well in general, and insists he’ll be rooting for Villa this season.

He said: “He’s obviously got a huge managerial career in front of him, and I’ve got a couple of friends at Villa who I always keep an eye out for, so I hope they do well for 36 games a season, just not when they’re playing us.”

Robertson is not the only Liverpool man who will be keeping an eye on Gerrard as the season goes on, with many fans seeing him as the natural successor to Jurgen Klopp.

However, Gerrard himself has downplayed this sort of talk, insisting that right now, his only priority is managing Aston Villa.

More on that here.
