Man United’s strangest omission has been left out all season

Amad Diallo Man United

Is he deserving of some minutes?

Manchester United have spent a lot of money over the past 10 years, so it’s hard to get excited every time a new signing walks in the door. However, in the case of Amad Diallo, things were different.

When it emerged United were spending €40 million (including bonuses) on an 18-year-old who had played just four games of senior football in his life, fans were a combination of excited and confused.

It seemed an odd signing, given United tend to produce young talent better than most clubs, and Diallo was never going to walk into the team at that age.

But when he has been given a chance, he has shown why United took the gamble on him. The question is – why has he not been given more opportunities?

It has become somewhat of a running joke that Diallo is always on the winning team in training, so much so that the United Twitter account has started addressing it…

And while we won’t be basing on our argument on training games we don’t even get to watch, it does say a lot that he is heavily involved with first team training, and is clearly not out of place among the senior professionals.

In fairness to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he did give Amad the odd chance here and there. However he never seemed to be rewarded for good performances.

When he was 18 years of age, he came off the bench against AC Milan in the Europa League. He scored a brilliant goal that ultimately was crucial for United advancing to the next round.

It would have made sense if he was rewarded for this performance with a start in the league, but this was not the case.

Against Wolves on the final day of last season, the young Ivorian ran the show, and looked a level above a number of established Premier League players.

His touch was perfect, as was his weight of pass. He seemed like the sort of attacker who can dictate what the players around him do, similar to Jadon Sancho.

It was the type of performance to get excited about. But a combination of injuries and Solskjaer being under pressure meant that Diallo has hardly featured all season.

Ralf Rangnick played him against Young Boys in the Champions League, and again he looked good, but again, he hasn’t featured since.

He is now being linked with a loan move to Wayne Rooney’s Derby County, and if United are not going to play him, it is one that he should definitely be looking at.
