Kenny’s Kids: Wednesday round-up.

The Kenny’s Kids Twitter account was keeping busy across all of the action on Wednesday evening as Ireland’s brightest talents impressed once again across the water.

Here are the biggest stories from Wednesday’s games in England and Scotland…

Kenny’s Kids in the Premier League

There was lots of intriguing team news yesterday evening as ongoing Covid-19 problems in the Premier League opened doors for some young Irish talent.

Ireland under-21 midfielder Will Smallbone played seventy minutes for Southampton against Crystal Palace and put in an assured display. Smallbone has been out injured since last January but performed to a high level at Selhurst Park where the two sides drew 2-2.

He was eventually replaced by Shane Long, who has received lots of praise from Ralph Hassenhuttl in recent weeks.

At the Amex, there was a rare Premier League start for Aaron Connolly and a first inclusion for Ireland under-21 forward Evan Ferguson who made the bench.

Connolly played the first hour for Brighton in what turned out to be a frustrating evening for Graham Potter’s men.

In the only other Premier League game, Arsenal defeated West Ham United 2-0 at the Emirates. Ireland under-21 striker Armstrong Okoflex was an unused sub for the Hammers. The 19-year-old has eleven goals in Premier League 2 this season and should make his first-team debut before long.

Kenny’s Kids in Scotland

Meanwhile, in Scotland, former Shamrock Rovers defender Liam Scales started for Celtic against Ross County.

Scales scored for the Glasgow giants last week and backed it up last night by providing an assist in an impressive performance which also included fifty passes and eight successful duals.

Still only 23, he could become an important player for Ireland in future years if he continues on this sort of trajectory.
