Shamrock Rovers Score Last Minute Equaliser To Take Control Of Europa League Qualifier

Shamrock Rovers got their European campaign underway on Thursday night.

On a busy night for Irish sides in Europe – with St Patrick’s Athletic and Cork City also in action – Rovers were the opening act. The Tallaght side travelled to take on Norwegian side SK Brann in the first qualifying round of the Europa League and recorded a well-earned 2-2 draw.

Roberto Lopes made the difference for Stephen Bradley’s team, scoring twice on the night, and Jack Byrne’s deliveries proved dangerous all evening. Lopes’ stoppage-time equaliser put the Irish side in control of the Europa League tie.

The home side opened the scoring after 12-minutes through Taijo Teniste, who netted past Alan Mannus with a brilliantly struck dipping shot into the bottom left-hand corner.

Rovers had cleared the initial corner, but couldn’t prevent Teniste taking a touch and striking the ball from distance.

Rovers worked their way into the match and registered a priceless away goal 12 minutes before half-time.

Byrne curled an accurate free-kick delivery into the Brann penalty area, where Lopes connected with a diving header to knock the ball home and give the Tallaght side advantage in the tie.

However, just a minute after scoring at the other end, Lopes gave away a penalty. The Rovers defender fouled Veton Berisha in the box, and the Brann striker made no mistake with his spot kick to put the Norwegians back in front.

The Irish side had the best chance of an even second half, but Aaron Greene failed to convert his chance. Byrne played in Trevor Clarke with a clever pass beyond the Brann defence, the left-back squared the ball to Greene who somehow managed to hit the Brann goalkeeper from six-yards out with a tame, scuffed attempt on goal.

Rovers’ chance to take control of the tie looked to be gone until Lopes powered home a header in the final minute of stoppage time. The return leg is at Tallaght Stadium next Thursday.
