Barcelona have made Paris Saint-Germain an offer they could find very hard to refuse.
According to Sky Sports, the Catalan club have offered €100m and two players for Neymar. PSG can select two players from a list of six Barca stars, including Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho, Ivan Rakitic, Malcom, Samuel Umtiti and Nelson Semedo.
They could earn back half the money they paid for Neymar in 2017, and land the two players Barcelona signed to replace him – Coutinho and Dembele.
Neymar is understood to have expressed his desire to leave PSG and he is only interested in returning to Barcelona, where he played the best football of his career between 2013 and 2017.
The Qatari-owned club will not stand in his way and have effectively decided to cut their losses on a player they hoped would lead them to Champions League glory.
Neymar has only managed to play one knockout game in the European Cup in the last two seasons thanks to ankle injuries. While Kylian Mbappe has supplanted him as the Parisian’s most important player.
According to Spanish football journalist Diego Torres, PSG want to make Mbappe the highest-paid footballer in the world to prevent him from looking to leave and getting Neymar off the wage-bill is crucial to achieving this.
However, Sky Sports report that the French club are seeking over €200m for the forward rather than a cash/swap deal. That stance may change before the transfer window closes next month.
From Barcelona’s perspective, it is difficult to understand why they are willing to spend so much on a player who has caused them such hassle. Neymar (27) has also suffered three ankle injuries in the last-18 months and may have already peaked.
But getting two Barca players and €100m for an unhappy player, who appears to be more trouble than he is worth, looks like a great deal for PSG and they are unlikely to receive a better proposal.
