Brian Kerr Says He Is “Very Impressed” By FAI Reform Proposal

Brian Kerr has said that he has seen a proposal to reform the Football Association of Ireland and he believes that it could prove successful.

Kerr revealed on Tuesday evening that a group of FAI employees presented him with a proposal to reform the association. The former Ireland manager said he was “very impressed” by the plan and believes the powers that be – the new FAI board and government representatives – will feel likewise.

Kerr was speaking about the dire situation facing the FAI following Friday’s press conference which showed that the association is €55m in debt.

“In recent days, I’ve met a couple of employees of the association who put a very interesting proposal in front of me for a new reformed style of FAI,” Kerr said on Virgin Media Sport’s coverage of the Champions League.

“I think that when the new board comes into play and they get the opportunity to show it to the government and Minister (Shane) Ross, they should look at it very carefully.

“I was very impressed with what they showed me as a proposal for the future. But, in the short term, their jobs need to be saved. That’s the most crucial thing at the moment.”

On Tuesday afternoon, the FAI turned down the chance to appear in front of the Oireachtas Committee on Wednesday, saying they were “unable” attend as they are trying to deal with the financial crisis at the association.

Kerr said he has no issue with this, as the organisation have more pressing matters to attend to. He also said that he is “devasted” for hard-working FAI employees who are facing an uncertain future and that preserving their jobs is “the most crucial thing at the moment.”

“There are a lot of very fine people there working on the ground, they’ve had to put up with a lack of direction and mismanagement down through the years,” he said.

“The reality is the game has to continue. Football has to continue, matches have to continue to be played, people have to organise them, referees will be in place, people will be coaching teams. People arrange that and in the short-term, their jobs need to be saved. I think that’s the most crucial thing at the moment.”
