Ipswich Town’s David McGoldrick has been called up the Republic of Ireland squad for the games with Scotland and the USA. Here’s everything you need to know about the new boy.
1. McGoldrick Says No To Scotland
The current Ipswich striker is adopted and qualifies for Ireland through his birth grandmother. Although he was born in Nottingham, England, McGoldrick was courted by Scotland boss Gordon Strachan.
However, he refused his advances and committed to the Boys In Green. This commitment looks ot have paid off with McGoldrick today being called up to the Ireland squad.
2. He’s Highly Rated
McGoldrick was heavily linked with a £5 million move to Leicester during the summer but the deal never materialised as Ipswich held out for a higher valuation (£8 million). He scored 16 goals last season and Mick McCarthy rates him very highly, calling him “arguably the greatest striker in the (Championship).
However, a knee injury put an end to his season in mid-February. It’s not a stretch to think he would have smashed the twenty-goal barrier had he stayed fit.
3. He Scores Every Type Of Goal
Here are the highlights from McGoldrick’s fruitful 2013/14 season for Ipswich in which he scored sixteen league goals. As can be seen from the video, McGoldrick poses a threat from all over the pitch.
4. He’s Worked With The Best To Repair His Knee
Before a knee injury cut his season short, McGoldrick was flying high. Thankfully with the help of renowned knee rehab specialist Bill Knowles, the Ipswich striker has been able to get back to full fitness.
Here he is speaking about rehab:
“Bill Knowles is well known, he’s worked with Michael Owen, (Mario) Balotelli, Tiger Woods… He was name dropping left, right and centre! It’s not a bad list to be fair though. It certainly got my attention.
“A lot of the rehab stuff was all about leg strength. It wasn’t cardio. The Americans are 20 years ahead of us and they were doing stuff I’ve never done before.
“I woke up every morning and my legs were sore in a good way. I’ve continued that back here with Alex (Chapman) and BY (Matt Byard).
“I think that time in America definitely helped. I have to thank (owner) Marcus Evans for giving it the green light. It was completely different stuff to what I’ve seen and done before.”
Let’s hope the knee holds up and McGoldrick starts banging them in for the Boys In Green!
5. He’s Got A Gold Tooth
While the Irish squad may not possess too many gems, it now contains a man with golden teeth. McGodlrick is flashy on and off the pitch and his love of luxurious dentistry has earned him the nickname ‘David McGoldTeeth.
