Report: West Ham Linked With Move For Ireland’s James McCarthy

Everton and Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy is reportedly set for a move away from Goodison Park following an injury-hit last couple of years with the Merseyside club.

McCarthy recently returned from a double leg fracture which he sustained almost a year ago while attempting to block a shot from West Brom striker Soloman Rondon.

The Daily Mail are reporting that West Ham are interested in taking the Irish international on loan as they look to bolster their midfield options.

The report also outlines that fellow Premier League side Fulham are interested in McCarthy as well as Championship high-fliers West Brom.

McCarthy has only featured in 16 Premier League games for Everton over the last two seasons and could see a loan move away from Goodison Park as the ideal opportunity to gain valuable first team minutes in his return from injury.

The 28-year old joined the Toffees from Wigan for £13million in 2013 when Roberto Martinez was in charge at Goodison Park and has racked up 132 appearances and six goals in all competitions for the club.

The return to fitness and possible move for McCarthy should also represent a timely boost for new Irish manager Mick McCarthy ahead of the start of their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign which begins in March.

McCarthy has made 41 appearances for the Boys in Green but has not featured since 2016 due to injury.

Speaking on McCarthy’s return, Everton manager Marco Silva outlined that despite being a fan of the midfielder it would be very hard to give him minutes due to the difficult nature of their schedule.

“I know games will give him a better condition,” Silva told Everton TV.
“But we are playing tough, tough matches and it is not easy to give him what everybody knows will help him get better, which is minutes in those games. But he is a worker and I really like him.”
