Championship side Preston North End have reportedly ramped up their pursuit of signing Liverpool and Ireland Under-21 goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher on loan in January.
According to a report from the Daily Star, Liverpool’s Loan Pathways & Football Partnerships Manager Julian Ward had the red carpet rolled out for him as he visited the club.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had previously outlined that Kelleher, along with talented young striker Rhian Brewster, would be leaving the club on loan during the transfer window with the hope of getting more regular opportunities at senior level.
Ward reportedly likes to vet clubs before Liverpool send their players out on loan, with his visit a very good indication of North End’s chances of a deal for the young goalkeeper in January.
It is thought that Preston would have to guarantee the 21-year-old games meaning he would have to usurp their current number one Declan Rudd between the sticks.
Alex Neill’s side had started the Championship season very promisingly sitting in the automatic promotion spots at one stage but they have since fallen away after a string of four defeats on the bounce.
Kelleher made his senior competitive debut for Liverpool this season in the League Cup victory over MK Dons and saved a penalty in their shootout win over Arsenal in the competition’s next round. He is also set to play in the League Cup quarter-final against Aston Villa as Liverpool’s youngsters look to advance to the last four.
It’s clear that Liverpool and Klopp have high ambitions for the Cork native, with the Reds boss recently praising Kelleher’s talents.
