Loris Karius Makes Another High-Profile Error In Europa League Loss

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius was guilty of another high-profile error for his side Besiktas in their Europa League defeat to Slovan Bratislava on Thursday night.

Karius has been at the Turkish club since the summer of 2018 after he left Liverpool following two howlers in their Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in the same year.

The German made 35 appearances for Besiktas last year as they finished third in the Turkish Super Lig, securing a spot in the Europa League.

In Besiktas’ first game in the tournament, they went a goal down to their Slovenian opponents when Karius came rushing out of his goal to clear a long ball forward from the opposing goalkeeper.

He failed to judge the bounce of the ball as it went over his head, with the keeper also clashing with his defender to leave striker Andraz Sporar the chance to easily find the empty net.

Karius’ side managed to turn the game around before the break as they led 2-1 but two goals in stoppage time meant that they suffered defeat in their Europa League opener.

Elsewhere in the competition, Wolves, who are also in Besiktas’ group, lost 1-0 to Braga, Manchester United defeated their Kazakhstani opponents Astana 1-0 and Arsenal picked up a solid 3-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Celtic and Rangers were also in action with Neil Lennon’s side drawing 1-1 with Rennes and Steven Gerrard’s charges beating Feyenoord 1-0.
