Stoke City and Ireland midfielder James McClean was the subject of vile abuse as he revealed on Twitter a hate-filled birthday card he had received.
The card was reportedly delivered to Stoke’s training ground just over a week after McClean’s 30th birthday and contained a stream of vitriolic and abusive comments about the Irishman’s nationality.
Messages include telling McClean to “die” as well as referring to him as a “two-faced hypocritical bastard” in the card that he shared on Twitter.
An excerpt from the card read;
“You don’t like this country and we don’t like you. It’s about time these gutless English managers stood up to you and tell you to get back to shithouse called Derry. So you are fucking Irish international, any body can play for fucking Ireland. They give caps out in cornflake packets and you have to drink that muck called Guinness that qualifys [sic] you.”
McClean has come under fire from many fans over the years for his refusal to wear the poppy for Remembrance Day commemorations and must constantly defend himself over his reasoning behind his decision.
It is yet unknown as the whether or not the FA will investigate this instance of abuse aimed at McClean, something that he is more than familiar with during his time in England.
