Talented Irish U19 Defender Rewarded By Norwich With First Pro Contract

Irish U19 international defender Andrew Omobamidele has signed his first professional contract with Premier League club Norwich City.

The 17-year-old, who was born in Dublin, has been with The Canaries since July 2018 featuring for both the U18 and U23s at the club this season.

Omobamidele also featured for Ireland’s U17s in the European Championships in Dublin earlier this summer before being included in the U19s squad for their Euros in Armenia where he appeared in two games.

Since then the defender has won two further caps with Tom Mohan’s side as he continues to impress and progress up the ranks for both club and country.

Speaking to Norwich City’s website, Omobamidele outlined that he is ready to push on at Carrow Road following the club’s investment in him as a player.

“It’s an amazing feeling, it’s what I came to England to do, work hard and try get my first professional contract and it’s came so I’m very excited, ready to go again,” he said.

“I definitely worked hard to be where I am. I don’t think age really matters, I think once you’re able to play at a level, age doesn’t change anything. I have been working really hard, trying to string performances together and all stuff surrounding that.”

Omobamidele isn’t the only talented young Irish player plying their trade at Norwich City, with U21 international Adam Idah in and around the first team having made his debut in the League Cup against Crawley in August.

Former Drogheda United midfielder William Hondermarck signed for the club in January and has featured frequently for the U23s while winger Josh Giurgi has grabbed three goals in six games at U18 level.
