Former Celtic and Manchester United striker Henrik Larsson is reportedly in the running to become the new manager of League One side Southend.

Larsson has emerged as a shock candidate to take over at The Shrimpers, who currently sit 21st in League One as they look to replace Kevin Bond.

The Swede was in attendance at Stadium:mk this afternoon as Southend picked up a victory over MK Dons and according to The Southend Echo, Larsson will be interviewed for the vacant role.

Larsson had previously been in charge of Swedish side Helsingborg but quit his former club for the second time earlier this year, with Southend potentially representing an opportunity for him to return to the dugout.

His appointment would certainly be a high-profile one in terms of name value for Southend given his history at Manchester United, Barcelona and in particular, his time in Scotland with Celtic.

The striker spent seven seasons at Celtic Park after joining from Feyenoord and proved to be one of the club’s finest ever players, scoring an incredible 242 goals in 313 games.

Larsson then spent two seasons at Barcelona as well as four seasons back in Sweden with Helsingborg – his hometown club.

He also had a successful loan spell at Manchester United where he became somewhat of a cult hero in his brief period at Old Trafford which saw him score 3 goals in 13 games.
