Diego Costa Scores Four, Gets Sent Off In Remarkable Madrid Derby

Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid clashed in one of the most remarkable derby games in recent memory during the International Champions Cup in New Jersey on Friday night.

Diego Simeone’s side thrashed their rivals by 7-3, with striker Diego Costa netting an incredible four goals before receiving his marching orders along with Real’s Dani Carvajal following their involvement in a second half melee.

Real started with new summer signings Eden Hazard and Luka Jovic but found themselves behind in the first minute when Atletico’s big money arrival Joao Felix, played Costa through and his deflected effort trickled past Thibaut Courtois.

Felix then scored his first goal for the club following his £120 million move from Benfica seven minutes later before early substitute Angel Correia volleyed home a third.

3-0 down after just 20 minutes, it got no better for Real as the half wore on, the clinical Costa confidently grabbing his second after Saúl pounced on a defensive error from Sergio Ramos, before completing his first half hat-trick from the penalty spot.

Real also lost Luka Modric to a knee injury and found themselves 5-0 down heading into the second half which began in a similar vein to the first, Felix and Costa again linking up well for the former Chelsea man to dink the ball over Keylor Navas for his fourth and Atletico’s sixth.

Zidane’s side pulled one back before the game’s flashpoint, which saw Costa and Carvajal see red, with the Real defender clearly unhappy with a challenge on him from the Atletico frontman, resulting in a large melee between the two sides.

Vitolo then made it 7-1 thanks to an excellent solo run and finish and despite Karim Benzema and Javi Hernández Carrera getting on the scoresheet for Real, it did little to improve the scoreline as Atletico remarkably ran out winners by 7-3.
