West Ham and England midfielder Declan Rice has apologised following the emergence of old social media comments which appear to show him showing support to the IRA.

Rice recently made an international transfer from Ireland to England and is reportedly set to make his first start for the Three Lions against the Czech Republic tomorrow.

The 20-year old took to Instagram on Thursday and released a statement apologising for the comments which were brought to light by a story in the Irish Sun.

The comments were made in 2015 when Rice was 16-years of age and appeared under a post on Instagram by the former Irish midfielder’s then-teammate Tyreke Wilson.

Rice had been embroiled in an international tug-of-war between England and Ireland despite making three friendly appearances for the Boys in Green over the summer.

The emergence of the comments comes at a terrible time for Rice who has come under intense scrutiny as of late for his decision to switch allegiances.
