Manchester United are set to make a call on whether or not a move will be made for Victor Lindelof this January.
The Daily Star have reported that the Swede is still being weighed up by United but may not make the move this transfer window having been heavily tipped to do so. The 22-year-old is one of the highest rated players in Portugal and represented his country at last summer’s European Championships in France, which included a start against Ireland in the Stade De France.
Having joined the Lisbon club from Vasteras in 2012, Lindelof made the step up to Benfica’s first team having made just under 100 appearances for the club’s second string side. An imposing centre-half, Lindelof was tipped as another defensive option for Jose Mourinho’s side.
However, centre-back is a position that United are well stocked in. Some fans may feel more of a need for a recruitment drive at full-back or up front given the amount of dept in Lindelof’s position.
Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind are Mourinho’s preferred options – not to mention Eric Bailly, who is away with the Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations. This would make a move for another centre-half a strange exercise, especially considering the youth of the existing options.
With Lindelof’s teammate Goncalo Guedes reportedly linked with a move to Old Trafford, the Red Devils may put their transfer focus into more attacking positions.
However, a move for the Swede could materialise in the summer should his form continue for Benfica.
