Exciting Young Striker Deemed Eligible To Play For The Republic Of Ireland

Preston have been hot on the lips of Ireland fans of late given their strong contingent of current and potential internationals. Between Daryl Horgan’s quick transition and Aiden McGeady’s resurrection at Deepdale, Preston North End has become a sanctuary for the Irish.

The number of Irish internationals could be set to increase too, with Kilburn Times journalist Rob Brennan (via Balls.ie) reporting that the FAI have confirmed exciting attacker Callum Robinson is eligible to line out for the Boys in Green.

Former Aston Villa youth Robinson, a quick and agile player who would represent an exciting option for Ireland boss Martin O’Neill, has been in flying form for the Lilywhites, scoring eight goals this season.

Capable of playing on the wing or up front, Robinson could be the man to add to the striking department for O’Neill following the retirement of Robbie Keane last summer and the fact that Ireland’s first choice strikers are all over the age of 30.

Robinson has represented England at underage level and may need to be formally approached should Ireland become a realistic option for the 22-year-old. With very few Irish strikers coming through at any level, O’Neill may be forced to dip into the ‘granny rule’ pool of players to bolster his attacking options.

Lukas Jutkiewicz, Scott Hogan and Patrick Bamford are all eligible for Ireland and reasonably young, and there is a good chance that a new name could be seen under the list of strikers ahead of next month’s World Cup qualifier against Wales. Sean Maguire of Cork City could also be an option following an impressive season last term and strong start to pre-season.

Elsewhere, there could be bad news for Ireland as The Irish Sun report the FAI face a battle to secure the services at former youth international Tom Field. The 19-year-old, who plays for Brentford, is looking to focus on club football following rumours he could play for Wales.

The youngster plays in Ireland’s problem position of left-back and was previously capped against Estonia for the Ireland Under-16s.
