“I Don’t See Anyone Clamouring For Him To Be In The Squad”

Ireland’s crunch Euro 2020 qualifying clash with Switzerland has just gotten underway as the ‘Boys in Green’ look to extend their lead atop Group D.

Despite picking up 10 points from a possible 12 so far Ireland have looked devoid of options up front at times and have lacked a serious goal threat.

Mick McCarthy named four strikers in his squad for these next two games, namely, Callum Robinson, Sean Maguire, Scott Hogan and David McGoldrick.

The big omission from the squad was Southampton’s Shane Long who scored some important goals in the past for Ireland.

The four strikers named in the squad have not scored for their country which is a cause for concern according to Liam Brady before tonight’s match.

Brady expressed his surprise at Shane Long’s absence.

“I’m very surprised at his omission, I don’t really understand it.”

Richie Sadlier was more damning in his verdict indicating that it’s been a long time since the Southampton striker was considered a threat at international level.

“I think it’s an indication of where Mick sees him in the pecking order,” Sadlier said.

“It’s been a while, I don’t hear many people clamouring for Shane Long to be included.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve looked at an Irish squad with Shane Long in it and thought, this is a goal threat.”
