Jose Mourinho Explains Decision To Hand Match Ball To Troy Parrott

Troy Parrott made his much-anticipated Premier League debut on Saturday, coming on as an 85th-minute substitute for Tottenham in their 5-0 win over Burnley.

Following the end of the game, manager Jose Mourinho sought out Parrott and handed him the match ball as the 17-year-old became the youngest player to make a Premier League appearance this season.

Mourinho also hinted, yet again, that the Dublin attacker looks set to make his Champions League debut later this week when they travel to the Allianz Arena to take on Bayern Munich.

“It was his debut and I think it had a much bigger meaning to a kid who last week was playing against others his age in the UEFA Youth League,” Mourinho said of Parrott.

“Today he’s playing in the Premier League at 17. Will he play against Bayern Munich? I don’t know. All I can say is Harry Kane won’t. Who plays, we’ll see,” he told the club website.

Parrott has caused shockwaves since the beginning of the season. He is the top scorer in the UEFA Youth League and has been in red-hot form for Stephen Kenny’s U21 side. His eye-catching performances also saw him capped at senior international last month by Mick McCarthy in Ireland’s friendly win over New Zealand.
