Jesse Lingard has opened up on his bust-up with Wolves winger Pedro Neto after he helped inspire West Ham to an important win at Molineux.

Lingard opened the scoring for the Hammers with a superb solo effort and later teed up Jarrod Bowen, who made it 3-0 to David Moyes’ side after just 38 minutes with Pablo Fornals having netted the second.

Wolves threatened to rescue a dramatic point, however, with goals from Leander Dendoncker and Fabio Silva, the Hammers held on for the win as they reclaimed fourth spot ahead of Chelsea.

West Ham are now just four points behind third-placed Leicester and host the Foxes at the London Stadium on Sunday.

And while it was another productive evening for Lingard, who has scored six goals in eight games since joining West Ham on loan from Manchester United in January, the 28-year-old was confronted by Neto after the full-time whistle.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Lingard said: “He (Neto) said, ‘why do I play like that?’, but I don’t know what he meant by that.

“Of course, we won the game, I think he meant when we kept it in the corner, but it’s game management.

“There’s things like that we have to learn and keep picking up one.”

Speaking after the game, Moyes hailed Lingard as West Ham kept alive their hopes of securing European football for next season.

β€œHe was fantastic tonight,” Moyes said via Football London. β€œFor 20-30 minutes he was incredibly good and for the rest of it, he was a team player. I told him coming off how well he played.”

“Managing the game is something we need to do much better. The players are enjoying trying to score more.

“We felt every time we got it to Lingard and Antonio we would get a goal.”
