Chris Sutton has urged Celtic to bring Martin O’Neill back to the club to replace Wilfried Nancy.
The Frenchman was sacked by the Hoops following an abysmal run of results since he arrived.
Six defeats from eight matches saw Nancy binned by the club with head of football operations Paul Tisdale also departing having been the man to recommend the coach.
It was a decision that had been coming with fans demanding the end of Nancy’s reign.
That came after a 3-1 defeat to Rangers at Parkhead last Saturday.
The board finally acted and opted to get rid which now leaves the position vacant.
There will likely be countless applications for the role in the coming weeks.

But Celtic hero Sutton has backed Martin O’Neill and his coach Shaun Maloney to make another comeback to steady the ship for a second time this season and get the club’s nightmare season back on track.
O’Neill won seven of eight matches during his time in the dugout before Nancy was hired.
And Sutton believes he would be the ideal man to bring success back to the east end of Glasgow.

“I think short term that would be the safest move for Celtic to do that. Bring back Martin and Shaun Maloney,” Sutton said on Sky Sports.
“In the short term for Celtic it’s just about winning games and giving themselves a chance of winning the Premiership.
“Martin did brilliant in a short space of time.
“And knowing Martin like I do, and having spoken to Martin when he was at Celtic, I think he was on record as saying the club need to add in January, so that would seem to be the safest and most sensible option.”
Why O’Neill as Celtic interim boss would suit club again
O’Neill was a successful permanent manager at Celtic between 2000-05 in his own right.
And he helped the club to the Premier Sports Cup Final this season before Nancy lost the game.
O’Neill did back Nancy as boss but it did not work out.
It is a steady pair of hands the Scottish Premiership holders need now more than ever.
Results have been poor on the park and the Celtic board are at war with the support.
So a respected manager who has the adulation of the punters would be a smart decision.
It remains to be seen whether or not the club will definitely ask O’Neill the question, but fans are clamouring for it.
It is unlikely that he will be their next full-time gaffer, but short-term would suit better.
The likes of Robbie Keane and Craig Bellamy will be on the bookies’ shortlist to become the next boss at Parkhead.
