Josh Honohan is on the verge of a transfer from Shamrock Rovers to English League One side Lincoln City, with an initial €500,000 fee agreed between the two clubs.
The Cork-native has had his admirers for some time, with previous summer interest rebuffed due to Rovers fighting on domestic and European fronts in recent months.
However, the Tallaght club has now changed tack, with the versatile defender set to have a crack in the EFL.
Josh Honohan turns 25 in March, and having played almost 100 games for Rovers at the top of Irish football over the last two seasons, the time is right for such a career move.
The transfer deal is said to include add-ons, which could deliver a return of almost €1 million for Shamrock Rovers.

Josh Honohan Lincoln City career move comes at the right time
As it stands, the club has now generated around €8 million in transfer fees under the reign of Stephen Bradley, following sales of players such as Liam Scales (who was a tactical flop in Celtic’s League Cup final loss), Gavin Bazunu, Naj Razi, and Victor Ozhianvuna.
Josh Honohan has thrived under Rovers’ boss Stephen Bradley to the extent that he has received call-ups to Heimir Hallgrimsson’s Republic of Ireland squad.
The former Cork City man has yet to make his international debut, but he has been involved in recent times, despite an injury ruling him out of the most recent games against Portugal and Hungary.
A switch to League One should only enhance his international prospects.
With the deal all but signed and delivered, it remains to be seen if Honohan will make a farewell appearance against Hamrun Spartans in the last UEFA Conference League game on Thursday.

In other League of Ireland transfer news, Derry City have confirmed the signing of midfielder James Olayinka.
The Londoner has penned a two-year deal at the Brandywell, having impressed in his one season with Waterford.
Sligo Rovers have snapped up Ryan O’Kane, also on a two-year contract, after the winger spent the second half of last season on loan at the Showgrounds.
The Bit O’ Red have paid a fee to Shelbourne to acquire O’Kane’s services, with manager John Russell keen to get the deal wrapped up.
Bohemians have added to their squad with the acquisition of teen prodigy Hugh Martin from UCD.
At the tender age of just 16, Martin has already tasted senior football with the Students, and although he is a long-term signing, Bohs chief Alan Reynolds has earmarked the winger as a player who can contribute in the upcoming season.
