John Russell has revealed why he opted to sign a new multi-year deal as boss at Sligo Rovers.
The young coach, 40, is considered one of the hottest prospects in the League of Ireland and had one year left on his contract which was set to run until November 2026.
However the club decided this week to reward his work from last season with fresh terms and he was pleased to put pen to paper on the contract.
Russell guided Sligo to seventh in the division last season as he was nominated for Manager of the Year with the PFAI for 2025.
And the former player who turned out more than 100 times for the club cashed in on the goodwill to ensure he is in the dugout for the beginning of the coming campaign to attempt to build on the work he and his staff have already put in.

That, for Russell, was one of the major reasons behind making the call to pledge his future to the Showgrounds outfit as he explained the “special” club was always a pull for him.
“Significant investment at certain clubs as well as the introduction of multi-club ownership models have put serious pressure on our club model and our ability to compete for silverware and those coveted European places,” Russell told the club’s website after signing the new deal.
“We understand this.
“We know we’re up against it each year, but we must continue to innovate, develop and improve the players, stick to our principles and keep believing in what we’re doing.

“Our club is special. Sligo Rovers is more than just a football club. It’s the heartbeat of the community. In life, we all want to be part of something bigger.”
The ambitious coach is clearly ready for the next step with Sligo and club chairman reiterated what the manager said as he, too, revealed why he and the club were so proud to have him confirmed.
Tommy Higgins said: “In having John in charge, we have who we believe is the best young manager in the league leading our first team and shaping how the club will evolve over the next few years.
“Last year was another very challenging year for the club on and off the pitch.
“However, we faced adversity and came out stronger at the far end, and John has assembled a really competitive squad already, well ahead of the new season.”
Russell has 42 wins from his 126 matches in charge of Rovers with 55 defeats and 29 draws in that period.
