Watch: Leanne Kiernan Scores Screamer As Ireland Women Defeat Portugal

Shelbourne striker Leanne Kiernan was at the forefront of the action as the Republic of Ireland women’s team overcame Portugal in an impressive 3-1 win in the Azores.

The 18-year-old was joined on the scoresheet by Katie McCabe and Louise Quinn – with Colin Bell’s side avenging their 1-0 loss on Thursday in the perfect manner.

While only a friendly, the victory will be certain to add to the growing confidence and morale in this group, the same team who managed to nick a draw against European champions Netherlands recently.

Ireland started the game brightly and took the lead in the 34th minute when Heather Payne won the ball and played in Kiernan.

The youngster had plenty left to do but then whipped in a sumptuous cross which was met powerfully by McCabe, who found the corner in style.

Kiernan then went from provider to scorer just after the break – with an absolutely stunning goal. It looked as if Portugal would deal with Niamh Fahey’s long ball, but Kiernan showed incredible pace to get between the defenders – before firing home a fantastic half-volley into the top corner to double Ireland’s lead.

The icing was then put on the cake when McCabe’s cross found clubmate Louise Quinn at the back post – and the Arsenal defender made no mistake from close range.

Three excellent goals and an all-round assured performance will have Colin Bell beaming with his squad – and with talent like Kiernan in their ranks, the future is definitely bright for Irish football.
