Diego Costa is back on a football field and back among the goals – with the former Chelsea star finding the net for Atletico Madrid in a routine 4-0 victory over Lleida Esportiu in the Copa Del Rey this evening.
Having left Stamford Bridge under acrimonious circumstances during the summer – Costa was only freed to make his second debut for Atleti in January – following the end of the club’s long transfer ban.
However, the £58 million signing picked up exactly where he left off in a red shirt after coming on for Angel Correa in the 64th minute – and five minutes later, the Spain international turned home Juanfran’s cross into the bottom corner, a goal which clearly meant a lot to him given his recent troubles.
Diego Godin, Fernando Torres and Antoine Griezmann picked up the other goals in what was a comfortable win in the last-16 tie.
Given his form at Chelsea in recent years – one would imagine this strike will be the first of many in a second spell at the Wanda Metropolitano for Costa, and with a horror miss from Alvaro Morata in the Blue’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal tonight, Chelsea fans will be ruing the day he fell out with Antonio Conte.
