Branislav Ivanovic Scores Stunning Overhead Kick For Zenit St Petersburg

Remember Branislav Ivanovic? Of course you do.

The Serbian defender was a colossus in his time at Chelsea, a rock at the back and not bad going forward either. Ivanovic found the net 22 times for the Blues, picking up three Premier League winner’s medals in his time at Stamford Bridge. He also scored a stoppage-time winner as Chelsea won the competition under the guidance of Rafael Benitez in 2013.

Having now moved on to Zenit St.Petersburg, the 33-year old has proven that his eye for goal has certainly not disappeared. Zenit faced Real Sociedad in the Europa League last night, and came out 3-1 victors – but the talking point was Ivanovic’s second-half overhead kick.

A long ball was played over the top of the Sociedad defence by Daler Kuzyaev, and Ivanovic remained onside to chest the ball down with ease before finding the far corner with his back to goal.

A goal most strikers will never score.

The goal was not the only stunner of the game however, as Ivanovic’s team-mate Leandro Paredes came up with a beauty of his own five minutes from time.

The Argentine midfielder skipped past multiple opponents before finding the bottom corner with a composed finish.

Zenit topped Group L with 16 points from six games and are safely through to the knockout stages of the competition. Many will be hoping to avoid the Russians on current form as they look to emulate their tournament victory in 2008.

One thing is for certain – Ivanovic’s goal was out of this world, and we could well be seeing it as a nominee for the Puskas Award.
