Manchester City have had a £50m bid rejected for Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez as they step up their attempts to lure the Chilean forward to the Etihad before the transfer deadline.

According to Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol – the bid did not include a deal offering any Manchester City players to the Gunners – with reports circulating earlier that Raheem Sterling was set to become part of any potential deal.

City are expected to return in the coming days with a higher offer in a desperate attempt to secure Sanchez’s services before the end of the window, whilst also remaining determined not to see any players head in the opposite direction. Sanchez has been repeatedly linked with a number of top clubs given his desire to play in the Champions League as well to win major trophies.

Arsenal would be left with little time to replace the Chile international should he depart – and with pressure again mounting on Arsene Wenger following Sunday’s 4-0 defeat to Liverpool, any sale would be sure to deeply anger Arsenal supporters.

Sanchez has previously worked with Pep Guardiola at Barcelona, and the Spanish manager is keen to reunite with him as the player has grown to become one of the Premier League’s top talents in recent seasons, scoring 23 goals last campaign.

Sanchez cut a frustrated figure during Sunday’s defeat – and his reaction to being substituted left many to believe that he wants to leave the Emirates and join Manchester City. He has one year remaining on his current deal and Arsenal would be resigned to losing him for free next summer should a sale not be sanctioned this week.

It has been a busy transfer window for City, with Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker, Ederson Moraes and Danilo arriving at the club. They will try tirelessly to secure the signing – and one thing is for certain, this saga is only beginning to develop.
