Steven Gerrard aims post-match dig at Old Trafford crowd

Steven Gerrard aims dig at Old Trafford crowd.

Steven Gerrard said that the Old Trafford crowd was “relatively quiet,” after Manchester United knocked his Aston Villa side out of the FA Cup on Monday night.

A lot was made pre-match of the reception that Gerrard could expect to receive, upon visiting the ground in which he so disliked as captain of Man United’s arch-rivals Liverpool.

Steven Gerrard: “Water off a duck’s back.”

The 41-year-old was indeed greeted by a chorus of boos but seemed fairly unperturbed, turning to face the Stretford End as he made his way to the dugout before kick-off.

The game was shown live on the BBC, with the broadcaster unable to drown out some x-rated chants during the game, and afterwards Gerrard told them that he actually felt the stadium could have been louder.

Relatively quiet. I have been to noisier stadiums than this. It was a good cup tie, a good atmosphere but in terms of what I got, water off a duck’s back,” the ex-Rangers boss said.

Man United knock out Aston Villa.

It turned out to be the last cup tie that Gerrard will lead his side into this season, after a first half Scott McTominay header put an end to Villa’s slim trophy hopes.

Despite their victory, it was another unconvincing display from Ralf Rangnick’s side and they were lucky not to concede an equaliser in the second half.

Just before the hour mark, Danny Ings had the ball in the net but the goal was ruled out due to an apparent foul on Edinson Cavani, with Jacob Ramsey also deemed to have been in an offside position as he blocked the Uruguayan’s run.

Minutes later, Ollie Watkins also thought he had scored, only for the assistant referee’s flag to be raised, with Ings ruled to have been offside on this occasion.

Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford each spurned chances to double United’s lead but in the end they had to settle for a 1-0 victory that sees them into the fourth round for the eighth consecutive season.

The Red Devils will host Championship outfit Middlesbrough in round four, with the tie due to be played over the weekend of February 4th – 7th.
