Portuguese sports newspaper Record is reporting that Liverpool have made a club record bid for Benfica forward Darwin Nunez.
The offer is said to be in the region of £85 million, a figure that would eclipse the £75 million the Reds paid for Virgil van Dijk in 2018.
Liverpool bid for Nunez.
If the much-coveted Nunez does sign on the dotted line with Liverpool, it would likely come as a blow to Manchester United fans after the Old Trafford outfit were heavily linked with the Uruguayan.
Nunez scored 34 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions for Benfica last season and with the long-term futures of Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino in doubt, it would appear that Jurgen Klopp is getting ahead on signing replacements.

Tarkowski transfer close.
Elsewhere on Merseyside, Everton appear to be closing in on the signing of Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski.
The 29-year-old, who recently suffered relegation to the Championship with the Clarets will still feel that he can do a job for a club in the Premier League.
The Athletic reports that the Mancunian is having his medical at Everton today, ahead of a move that could be sealed when his Burnley contract expires on June 30th.
The experienced Tarkowski would bring a welcome boost to Frank Lampard’s central defensive options, with Yerry Mina too often injured, and Mason Holgate and Michael Keane prone to errors.
James Tarkowski is having his medical at Everton ahead of a possible move this summer, The Athletic understands.
