Ex-Man United defender urges Ralf Rangnick to drop Marcus Rashford

Paul Parker calls for Marcus Rashford omission.

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has called on Ralf Rangnick to leave Marcus Rashford out of future starting XIs.

Rashford played 76 minutes from the start of the Red Devil’s 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace in Rangnick’s first game as interim manager last Sunday, as the German coach began laying the seeds of a new system at Old Trafford.

Paul Parker: “He can’t continue to pick Marcus Rashford.”

However, Parker says that Rangnick’s preferred 4-2-2-2 formation will not suit Rashford and that the forward should be dropped in favour of Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood scored United’s goal in their 1-1 Champions League draw on Wednesday, as Rashford was rested along with the 10 other starters from last weekend.

“If he wants to play his system, he (Rangnick) can’t continue to pick Marcus Rashford,” Parker wrote in his column for Eurosport.

“I think he has got to look at Mason Greenwood more – he is someone who can play wide and centrally.

“Greenwood needs a run of games otherwise he will start getting disillusioned. He’ll be asking himself: ‘Why can’t I get in the team after Marcus Rashford’s recent performances?”

Rangnick hails Greenwood attributes.

After Greenwood’s goal on Wednesday, Rangnick spoke at length about the 20-year-old’s technical attributes but added that he will need to improve physically in order for him to reach his top level.

“I think we have to develop him physically,” the 63-year-old told reporters.

“Technically, all the things he can do with the ball are outstanding. So I’m not so much worried about his technical level. We need to develop him physically and mentally to become the strongest version of himself.

“If we manage to do that, he can become a regular player and a very valuable player for our club for the future.”

Rashford missed the first seven Premier League games of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery during the summer, before making a goalscoring return in October’s 4-2 defeat to Leicester City.

He has since netted a further two goals in all competitions but is currently on a run of seven games without a goal.
