Patrick Bamford receives first call-up for England

Patrick Bamford receives England call-up.

Any lingering hopes of Patrick Bamford playing for Ireland appear to have been dashed, after the Leeds United striker received his first call-up for England today.

Bamford has been included in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Hungary, Andorra and Poland.

Patrick Bamford is eligible for Ireland.

He is joined in the 25-man squad by the returning Trent Alexander-Arnold, who missed Euro 2020 due a thigh injury, and Jesse Lingard who wasn’t selected for the tournament.

The news that Bamford has been selected by England should put paid to any remaining hopes of the 27-year-old lining out for Ireland.

Bamford is eligible for Ireland due to having an Irish grandparent and has represented the country at under-18 level.

However, he switched allegiance to England in 2012 and has represented the Three Lions up to under-21 level.

Patrick Bamford: “Playing for England would be a dream come true.”

Throughout his career, there have been calls for Bamford to switch back to Ireland, with the forward reportedly confirming his interest to Mick McCarthy during the ex-Ireland manager’s second spell in charge.

As his goals fired Leeds out of the Championship and into the Premier League, Bamford’s profile has increased and last October, he said it would be a “dream come true” to play for England.

Kenny rules out Patrick Bamford call.

When asked about the situation in June, Ireland manager Stephen Kenny seemed to put any further speculation to bed, saying: “He was very close to being in contention for England for the European Championships.

“It’s not realistic to suggest that at the moment I would feel. I think that was obviously his objective to go to the European Championships with England.”

After a nomadic early career, Bamford seems to have found a long-term home at Leeds and signed a new five-year contract at Elland Road just last week.

He scored 16 league goals as Marcelo Bielsa’s men won promotion in 2019/20 and followed that up by scoring 17 as the club finished 9th in their first season back in the Premier League since 2004.

Bamford is joined in the England squad by club teammate Kalvin Phillips, who played every match on England’s run to the Euro 2020 Final.
