Nathan Collins gets Player of the Month nod.

Republic of Ireland defender Nathan Collins has been nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month award for April.

The Burnley centre-back has been included alongside illustrious names such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Son Heung-Min, Kevin De Bruyne and Thiago Alcantara, and it’s just reward for the Leixlip native’s performances in recent weeks.

Nathan Collins form.

Collins has been given an extended run in Burnley team, as the Clarets have put together a remarkable run of form in their bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

During April, Burnley won four out of seven matches and not only has Collins contributed to a tightening of the team’s defence, he has also chipped in with crucial goals in victories over both Everton and Southampton.

The fact that manager Sean Dyche was sacked in the middle of the month makes Burnley’s steady form all the more impressive, and Collins has been a key part of their success.

The 21-year-old took a while to establish himself in the side after arriving from Stoke City last summer, but he has now played the full 90 minutes in seven out of Burnley’s last eight games, under the management of Dyche and caretaker boss Mike Jackson.

Irish winners.

An Irish player hasn’t won the Premier League Player of the Month award since Robbie Keane won his third in April 2007, sharing the accolade with his Tottenham Hotspur strike partner Dimitar Berbatov.

Roy Keane won the award twice (in October 1998 and December 1999), while the first first ever Irish winner was Mickey Evans, who picked up the award while playing for Southampton in 1997.

The award that Collins is nominated for should not be confused with the PFA Player of the Month award, which was won by Ireland’s Matt Doherty for his Wolves performances throughout September 2018.

How to vote.

While Collins should get plenty of Irish votes, he faces stiff competition from the likes of Ronaldo, who scored six goals for Manchester United across the month, and Gabriel Jesus, who hit the same number for Manchester City.
