Celtic close in on signing of Shamrock Rovers defender

Liam Scales

Liam Scales “close” to Celtic move.

Celtic are close to signing Shamrock Rovers defender Liam Scales, according to multiple reports today.

The versatile defender is wanted by the Glasgow giants, who lost 2-1 away to Hearts in their opening game of the the 2021/22 Scottish Premiership season on Saturday. The Daily Record reports that Celtic will pay Rovers a six-figure fee for the 22-year-old.

What Liam Scales will bring to Celtic.

Scales is a natural centre-half, who is comfortable playing on the left side of a back three. This season, he has performed well in a left wing-back role for Stephen Bradley’s league leaders.

The Hoops signed Scales from UCD in November 2019 and he went on to make 16 appearances in a condensed 2020 season as the club won the Premier Division title. Scales’ performances led to him being named the club’s young player of the year for 2020.

He has represented the Republic of Ireland at under-18 and under-21 level.

Celtic make horror start to new season.

New Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou appears to be in desperate need of reinforcements as he aims to wrestle the Premiership title back from Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side.

This task has been made all the more difficult after an opening weekend which saw contrasting results for the Old Firm rivals.

Celtic were on the receiving end of an 89th-minute winner as newly-promoted Hearts gave the Australian manager a nightmare start to his first league campaign in Scotland.

Rangers, meanwhile, made light work of Livingston as they ran out 3-0 winners at Ibrox, leaving them top of the league on goal difference after one game, a position they will intend to stay in for the remainder of the season.

Celtic European woe.

If that wasn’t bad enough for Celtic, the club’s Champions League campaign collapsed at the first hurdle after a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Midtjylland of Denmark in the second qualifying round.

As a result, they have dropped into the Europa League third qualifying round, where they will come up against Czech side FK Jablonek, before a potential clash with AZ Alkmaar of the Dutch Eredivisie.
