Aston Villa sign much-wanted winger Leon Bailey.
Aston Villa have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for the transfer of Jamaican international Leon Bailey, subject to the player completing a medical and finalising personal terms.
The signing is something of a coup for the Birmingham club, with a number of clubs reportedly interested in snapping up the winger. Last summer, The Athletic reported that both Manchester City and Manchester United had expressed interest in adding Bailey to their ranks.

Bailey’s arrival will be all the more significant for Villa if Jack Grealish finalises a move to City, with a £100 million offer reportedly on the table.

How has Leon Bailey’s career gone so far?
Bailey began his European career with Belgian club KRC Genk.
He made his top flight debut in August 2015 and went on to win the Belgian Young Footballer of the Year award for 2015/16.
Leverkusen paid €20 million for his services in January 2017 and he has gone on to score 39 goals for the club in 156 appearances.
In 2017/2018, Bailey was named Newcomer of the Year by the VDV, Germany’s version of the PFA, and was included in the Bundesliga Team of the Season.
What about his international credentials?
Bailey has had something of a tumultuous relationship with the Jamaican football association. In 2017, it was reported that “he would like to see an improvement in the Jamaican standard of football before the youngster ever dons the Jamaican colours.”
He finally made his senior debut in against Honduras in June 2019 and scored his first goal for the Reggae Boyz in September of that year, in a 6-0 win over Antigua and Bermuda.

What type of player is Leon Bailey?
Bailey mostly plays as a right-sided forward but can operate on the left and down the middle as well.
He likes to dribble and his crossing is seen as a strength. Much like Grealish, he trickery often leads to fouls against him.
It would be interesting to see the pair link up at Villa Park but if Grealish does make a move during this transfer window, then a lot of Villa’s creative responsibilities will be placed onto the shoulders of Bailey.
