Georgie Kelly scores dream debut goal.

Georgie Kelly made a sensational impact on his long-awaited Rotherham United debut on Saturday afternoon, scoring the goal that sealed their promotion back to the Championship.

With 10 minutes to play, and with the Millers leading 1-0 away to Gillingham, former Bohemians man Kelly was introduced before making it a debut to remember with the help of fellow Irishman Chiedozie Ogbene.

Ogbene provides assist.

As the clock ticked towards injury time, Ogbene won the ball on the right flank before playing a simple pass to the onrushing Kelly, who duly fired a shot into the net, sending the away fans into raptures.

Heading into League One’s final day, the top three of Wigan Athletic, Rotherham and MK Dons were on 89, 87 and 86 points respectively, and just top two would secure a passage into English football’s second tier.

All three promotion contenders won on Saturday afternoon, meaning that Wigan and Rotherham go up while MK Dons will have to make do with a place in the play-offs.

Georgie Kelly ends long wait.

As Kelly and Ogbene celebrate, that means disappointment for the Irish contingent at MK Dons, namely Warren O’Hora, Conor Coventry and Troy Parrott, despite securing a 5-0 win away to Plymouth Argyle.

For Kelly, he gets a fairytale ending to a promotion campaign which he seemed destined not to play a part in.

The 25-year-old made the move across the Irish Sea back in January but he has had to wait for his chance at Rotherham, with manager Paul Warne stating in February that he will need to bide his time.

Manager heaps praise on Georgie Kelly.

“He’s going to be a bit out of the first team but if something happens to one of my strikers I’ll have no problem him putting in the squad, then it’s about getting on the pitch,” Warne said after Kelly scored on his debut for the club’s under-23 side.

“He knows he’s got the painful road to get to the physical stature of the players here but he’s got a real determination, he’s a real clever lad, he understands.

“He’s already started his programmes and he’s progressing nicely so we’re really pleased with him.

“He’s an amazing guy. You’ll sit there and chat to him, you want him to do well and his team-mates want him to do well. He’s a big part of our success here.”

After his memorable contribution on Saturday, it certainly seems like it was worth the wait for Kelly.

With a full pre-season behind him in Yorkshire, the forward will be looking to repeat these heroics on a regular basis in the Championship next season.
