Arsenal confirm Ben White signing.

Arsenal have announced the signing of Brighton & Hove Albion defender Ben White for an undisclosed fee.

It had been widely reported in recent weeks that Arsenal were willing to spend £50 million on the centre-back who will be expected to slot right in to Mikel Areta’s starting XI.

In a statement announcing the signing, Arsenal said: “Ben White has joined us from Brighton & Hove Albion on a long-term contract.

“The 23-year-old defender, who has proved to be one of the Premier League’s finest young prospects, joins us after spending the summer as part of the England squad at the Euros.”

Ben White was courted by Leeds.

White is a product of Brighton’s academy and made 36 Premier League appearances as Graham Potter’s side finished 16th last season.

Last summer, he was at the centre of a tug-of-war between The Seagulls and Leeds United after impressing on loan for the Elland Road outfit during their promotion season in 2019/20. However, Brighton rejected three bids and White signed a new four-year contract at the club in September 2020.

Arsenal boss delighted with Ben White signing.

He has been the subject of speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal in recent weeks and Gunners boss Arteta is delighted to finally get his man.

“Ben was a top target for us and it’s great that we’ve completed his signing,” the Spaniard told the Arsenal website. “Ben has been educated with two very good clubs, Brighton and Leeds, in recent seasons. He has benefitted well from two very good coaching set-ups and has shown with both Brighton and on loan with Leeds what a strong talent he is.

“Ben is an intelligent defender who is very comfortable with the ball at his feet and his style fits perfectly with us. And of course, he is still young, so his age and profile fits with what we are building here. We are all looking forward to Ben being central to our future long-term plans.”

White is Arsenal’s third summer signing as they look to improve on last year’s eighth-place Premier League finish. He follows the arrivals of Portuguese left-back Nuno Tavares from Benfica, as well as Belgian midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht.

White could make his Gunners debut in a home friendly against London rivals Chelsea this coming Sunday.
