Virgil van Dijk claims Jurgen Klopp is ‘like a father’

Virgil van Dijk discusses one of the ways that Jurgen Klopp has influenced Liverpool’s mentality.

In a recent interview with Rio Ferdinand for BT Sport, Virgil van Dijk discussed the impact that Jurgen Klopp has on ensuring players maintain their composure.

At the time the interview took place, Man City were not yet Premier League champions.

While Ferdinand asked if Van Dijk had spent much time discussing the potential of winning the quadruple van Dijk responded that it wasn’t something the squad discussed.

“Not (discussed) at all and that comes from the manager,” said Van Dijk.

“Like a father.”

Van Dijk is clearly full of respect for Klopp but even went as far as claiming Klopp is a father figure to the team in the way he teaches his side.

“I think he, like a father, teaches us that there’s no point in thinking about these things, it could also go the other way. Obviously, we will try to do it.

“You participate in a competition to try to win it, you don’t just be there and be one of the teams hoping for the best. We’ll try to win it.”

Ultimately, Liverpool won their final Premier League match of the season but so did Man City, meaning the club would have to keep waiting if they dream of becoming immortalised with the quadruple.

“We’re in a good position but we don’t speak about this,” said Van Dijk, prior to the Premier League season ending. “Whatever happens, happens. We will be sad because we’re quite close… If we’re being completely honest.”

His side came so close to glory that the loss is sure to sting but with the potential to bring home a third trophy, it’s no time for Liverpool to feel sorry for themselves.
