Ralph Hasenhuttl predicts historic relegation battle

Even though they might be eight points clear of an Everton side that sit atop the relegation zone, Ralph Hasenhuttl isn’t claiming that his Southampton side are completely safe from the battle at the bottom.

While Watford and Norwich are quite a bit behind, in second-last and last place respectively, Everton are only two points off Burnley and Leeds with a game in hand. Hasenhuttl made the point that this could lead to quite a high point total being necessary to survive the season.

“This season can be that you need 40 or maybe more points,” said Hasenhuttl ahead of his side’s Brentford clash.

“This is possible, it could be for the first time in Premier League history.”

The battle at the bottom

It doesn’t look likely that Hasenhuttl’s side will end up in the relegation zone but he doesn’t believe that’s an excuse for them to take their foot off the pedal.

“I don’t know if all three teams down there will pick up more points than we have and will make before the end of the season so I’m not sure but it’s not about the feeling of being safe.”

Even if it’s not a case of them dropping lower, Hasenhuttl wants to see his side go up a few positions in the table by the end of the season.

“We have the chance for getting in the top-ten position as well.

“This is the direction we are looking to be honest.”

“We want to have a game against Brentford now where we do it better than in the last game against Crystal Palace, especially in the end. This gives us a chance to end up high up the table.”
