Former Manchester United defender Rafael da Silva has claimed that former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard used to hate him and his twin brother Fabio when they played in the Premier League.

Both da Silva brothers played for Man United in the late 2000s and early 2010s and would have come up against Gerrard’s Liverpool a number of times in that period.

Rafael was speaking to The Athletic about his time in Manchester and said that Wayne Rooney told him that Gerrard wasn’t exactly fond of the two Brazilian defenders.

“Wayne Rooney told us that Steven Gerrard hated us,” Rafael said.

“He said that Gerrard told him on international duty, ‘Those twins, they are pricks!’ We never did anything to him but wear a different shade of red.

“I guess that’s all it takes. And to be honest, I understood what he meant. The feeling was mutual.”

Both da Silva twins joined Manchester United in 2008 and Rafael stayed there until 2015, while his brother Fabio left the club a year earlier in 2014.

The brothers grew up in Petropolis in Brazil, roughly an hour’s drive from Rio de Janeiro, and played youth football for Fluminense.

The da Silva’s were scouted by United while they were still in the youth system at Fluminense, and the pair moved to Manchester at the age of 17, although they were unable to play senior football for the club until they turned 18.

Rafael got more game time with United during his stay there, as his brother was often sidelined with injuries, although Fabio did start in the 2011 Champions League final loss to Barcelona.

The brothers are now 31-years-old and are still playing professional football, with Rafael currently contracted to Turkish side Basaksehir, while Fabio plays for Nantes in France.
