Legendary broadcaster John Motson calls time on his live commentary duties this weekend after almost 50 years describing the game on radio and TV.
Given the amount of experience he has under his belt, Motson, who will continue on Match of the Day until the end of the season, is better placed than most to definitively list some of the greatest players the world has ever seen.
While speaking with Jermaine Jenas on BBC Radio 5 Live, the 72-year-old firstly said he believed Paul Gascoigne was the most ‘naturally gifted’ English player ever produced.
“He was the most naturally gifted English player that I commented on.”
‘Motty’ went on to praise the positive impact foreign players have had on the English game, singling out Thierry Henry and Eric Cantona in particular, before diving into one of the most polarising debates in modern football: who is the best player of all-time, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?
The Salford native was in no doubt that the answer is Ronaldo, citing his barely believable statistics as one of the main reasons why.
“I think Ronaldo is the best player I ever saw. How you can argue with his stats I just don’t know. It’s just bewildering.”
'Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player I've ever seen' 🇵🇹 🐐
John Motson, who bows out of live commentary duties this weekend, believes there is no one better than the former #MUFC man.
