Since his return to Manchester United last summer, Paul Pogba has been the subject of massive scrutiny by fans and critics alike, the kind that only a world record transfer fee can bring.
The midfielder arrived back to Old Trafford following an extremely successful four season spell with Juventus. While he was off winning successive Serie A league titles in Italy, much was changing at United.
The retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, followed by the failed efforts of his successors saw fans enduring the kind of seasons they had not known for a generation.
The arrival of Jose Mourinho and Pogba at the start of the season gave fans hope that perhaps the barren times were about to end once more and placed massive expectation on their shoulders.
Since the start of the season the Frenchman has scored only four times and has seen a chorus of criticism across social media. It all comes down to the price tag. £89 million is a truly staggering amount of money to pay for a player and so it is inevitable that fans will rest their hopes on such a player.
However, Pogba was not bought to be a goal scorer. Rather, Mourinho brought him to the club to own the midfield and provide quality ball to his forwards, the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
If that was the brief he was given by the manager then he has delivered in abundance, as this fan points out using the numbers crunched by Squawka.
The truth is that if United’s strike force were on target more then there would be no argument that Pogba wasn’t the saviour everyone hoped for.
In fact, another fan was compelled to show just how prolific the 24-year-old has been with his provision of precision ball to United’s forwards.
At the end of the day, unless Pogba is scoring 20 goals a season and destroying opponents with impunity each and every game, the critics will be quick to pounce.
Such is the price of expectation.
